Dr Anita Iyer has specialist expertise in Gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary Pathology and is a Fellow of the Rogyal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), the college of American Pathology (FCAP) and the American Society of Clinical Pathology (FASCP). 

Dr Iyer trained in Anatomical Pathology in the United States in 2003, at the Yale University, School of Medicine and later completed a one year Fellowship program in Gastrointestinal Pathology at the same institute.  Earlier, she completed a Masters Research program in Pathology at the Boston University School of Medicine.  Subsequently, Dr Iyer has held dual appointments as the Director of GI Pathology at Fletcher Allen Helathcare, Vermont, US and an Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont (Oct 2007 - Jan 2012).  Dr Iyer has trained and practiced in tertiary level academic institutions, with extensive experience in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology of most organ systems including: head-face-neck, genitourinary, gyn-breast, neuropathology, pulmonary, hepato-biliary, gastrointestinal, bone and soft tissue. 

As a practicing consultant, Dr Iyer has been actively engaged in conducting GI/hepatobiliary multidisciplinary conferences, was a member of the Vermont Cancer Centre and has served on the protocol review committee.  Dr Iyer has published several articles in peer reviewed journals as well as reviewed GI focused articles for pathology journals.

Since relocating to Australia in 2012, Dr Iyer obtained Fellowship of the RCPA whilst serving in Honorary roles at the Departments of Anatomical Pathology and Colorectal Medicine, at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.  During this time, Dr Iyer was engaged in research on "Interval colorectal cancers" with the department of colorectal medicine and was teaching medical students at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Iyer's areas of special interest include; Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology and she joined the Anatomical Pathology Department at Southern.IML in 2014.
